Listen - storytelling and patient feedback

'A new approach to learning from your experiences of care'.

Through our patient and public engagement strategy - listen, learn, lead - you can provide your story and feedback in a variety of ways. This can be done through submitting your story, or by providing feedback through a survey.

Storytelling

We want to listen to your experiences of care in our hospitals, and you can help us do this through telling your story. Stories and storytelling have been used throughout time to share learning and knowledge. A good story engages our curiosity, emotions and imagination, helping us make sense of a complex world.

We invite you to share your story to help us lead improvement across our multidisciplinary teams. This can be done in a variety of ways:

  • in writing
  • through multi-media
  • an audio recording
  • filming a video.

We use these stories in different scenarios to ensure our patient voices are heard across the Trust (including at board meetings) and that we provide opportunities for learning and improvement for all of our staff members.

What type of stories can be submitted?

Your story should ideally be within the last 12 months from the date of your submission. We recognise that some of the mandated surveys we facilitate can overlook groups of individuals with specific conditions, we hope that this way of sharing your story can better represent these groups in our procedures.

  • A parent/child’s experience of an inpatient stay
  • A person who has been treated from “cradle” through to adulthood
  • A young person’s transition from paediatric to adult services
  • The challenges of a multiple admissions and or a long-term stay for adults
  • Living with a long-term chronic condition / self-care
  • People using outpatient services
  • A person who has been a patient and became a staff member
  • Experiences of care at a specialist tertiary Trust  - for example complexity, patients from across UK/all ages, specialist care
  • An excellent experience of care
  • Experiences of hospital food
  • Experiences of communication with the hospital
  • Experiences of being a carer of a patient.

How do we use your story?

This will depend on your story: we may publish it on our website or on social media (with your consent) or share it internally with our staff. We want to take your story to drive improvements with our policies and procedures by listening to our patients.

How can I submit my story?

If you would like to share your story, please email us on ppe@rbht.nhs.uk. Let us know if you give permission for your story to be shared, or for it to remain anonymous in the email.

We abide by privacy policies and will never share your private details publicly.

Patient feedback

In addition to storytelling and sharing, we receive from patients and families through:

  • national surveys for example inpatient, outpatient and paediatric surveys
  • FFT survey
  • the NHS Friends and Family Test survey
  • PALS survey
  • patient and family open days
  • focus groups and divisional workshops
  • experience based co-design workshops working with patients, families and staff.

We welcome and encourage you participate in surveys, however some of the surveys are by invitation only. This will occur if you are sampled in a specific study, or are invited to give feedback after your care with us at either of our hospitals.
