Appointments

We offer in-person, telephone, and video appointments.

How to get an appointment

You or your child can be referred to our service by your GP, cardiologist or local paediatrician if you or your child have:

  • a confirmed or suspected inherited cardiac condition
  • a family history of an inherited heart condition
  • had a death in the family due to sudden cardiac arrest (including sudden infant death syndrome) or an inherited cardiac condition

Changing your appointment

If you or your child are unable to attend an appointment, please let us know as soon as possible. This means that we can offer the appointment to another patient.

If you would like to change the  first appointment with us, please contact us.

If you would like to change a follow-up appointment, please contact the outpatients department.

If you or your child miss your appointment and do not let us know, you may be discharged back to your referring doctor.

Before your first appointment

You may be invited to have some tests before your first appointment at either the Royal Brompton Hospital or Harefield Hospital. Some tests can only be carried out at specific hospitals, but otherwise we try and arrange them at the hospital which is most convenient for the patient.

As part of the assessment, we try and gather as much information as possible about your family’s history of cardiac conditions. We may also send you a questionnaire to complete before the first appointment.

You will receive an appointment letter confirming your or your child’s appointment details such as the date, time and location.

You can also use the MyChart patient app to view appointment information and get reminders of upcoming appointments. If you do not have the MyChart patient app, you will receive appointment reminders via your preferred means of communication.

During your appointment

Your or your child’s appointment may be an in-person, a telephone, or a video consultation. Appointments take place with a cardiologist or a clinical nurse specialist. We may also arrange an appointment with a genetic counsellor.

If the appointment is for your child, they must be present at the appointment, whether this is in-person, video or telephone.

For in-person appointments, please arrive 5-10 minutes before your appointment time.

If you have a video appointment, joining instructions will be sent to you before the appointment. If you are not able to have a video appointment, please contact us to make alternative arrangements.

More information about appointments can be found on our appointments page

After your appointment

We’ll arrange any follow-up you or your child may need.

Following your consultation, a written summary of your consultation called a ‘clinic letter’ will be sent to your GP. You will also receive a copy of the clinic letter.

You can use the patient MyChart app to view clinic letters and test results. Please note that test results should always be interpreted by a healthcare professional.
