Arrhythmia (Heart Rhythm Centre)

Arrhythmia services are a specialist branch of cardiovascular (heart) care. Arrhythmia services focus on diagnosing and treating problems with the heart's rhythm. These problems are known as arrhythmias.

Electrophysiology and Cardiac rhythm management (EP/CRM) are part of the cardiovascular services provided by the Heart, Lung and Critical Care (HLCC) Clinical Group, the largest specialist heart and lung centre in the UK.

Heart Rhythm Centre

The Heart Rhythm Centre (HRC) at Royal Brompton, Harefield and St Thomas’ hospitals is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the UK. It is a national and international tertiary referral centre providing highly specialised care for patients with arrhythmias.

We are part of the largest heart and lung centre in the UK and one of the largest in Europe. Our service provides care delivered by leading experts in the latest facilities across three convenient locations – Royal Brompton Hospital in Chelsea, West London; Harefield Hospital near Uxbridge; and St Thomas’ Hospital in central London.

Together, we perform more than 4,000 procedures each year across our three hospitals.

We treat outpatients and inpatients with different types of arrhythmia. We work closely with our colleagues in paediatric cardiology, adult congenital heart disease and transplantation cardiology to provide seamless patient care from childhood to adulthood across all sites.

We have a dedicated, integrated team of specialist consultants, clinical nurse specialists, an arrhythmia pharmacist and catheter laboratory clinical scientists working together across the three hospitals. Find out more about the arrhythmia team.

Inpatients and outpatients

Our teams specialise in treating patients with cardiac and lung conditions. Our teams specialise in treating patients with cardiac and lung conditions. Treatment takes place in the context of a wider cardiology and cardiothoracic facility with expertise in non-invasive investigative procedures and highly specialised support services. Specialist echocardiography, cardiac physiology, cardiac CT & MRI are an integrated part of this service and are available on site.

The centre has designated inpatient facilities, with specific provision on Paul Wood Ward and York Ward for arrhythmia patients at Royal Brompton Hospital, in the Acute Cardiac Care Unit at Harefield Hospital and within the cardiology wards at St Thomas’ Hospital

Outpatient clinics for patients take place at all sites. We also have one of the UK’s largest follow-up services for patients with implantable devices.

Electrophysiology and devices

We use advanced technology to treat patients with complex arrhythmias, with high success rates, working closely with the paediatric cardiology, adult congenital heart disease and cardiac transplant units to provide a specialist arrhythmia service.

Our facilities include:

  • 7 purpose-built cardiac electrophysiology labs, two hybrid suites and an XMRI intervention suite equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including advanced 3-D mapping and navigation systems, to understand the cause, establish diagnosis and determine treatment of arrhythmias.
  • A dedicated invasive laboratory that uses magnetic navigation (stereotaxis) technology, a procedure that uses two powerful magnetic fields to move a soft catheter inside the patient’s bodies with great precision and minimal risk, often used in patients with congenital heart disease.
  • One of the largest device implantation services in the country, including for pacemakers (including conduction system and leadless pacing), ICDs and devices for cardiac resynchronisation (CRT), of which we were involved in the early development.

We have specialist expertise in device therapy for patients with congenital and/or paediatric heart disease.

We also provide a regional device extraction service using state-of-the-art laser therapy.

The Heart Rhythm Centre team

Our medical team is made up of 35 consultant electrophysiologists across our 3 hospitals, 16 arrhythmia nurse specialists and more than 50 specialist cardiac physiologists. We are a nationally recognised medical and physiology training centre for cardiac EP and devices. Our clinicians are supported by 3 site-specific administrative networks of service managers, general managers and administration teams.
