The laboratory medicine team provide an expert service to support the specific requirements of a specialised hospital for diseases of the heart and lung. The Blood Sciences, Infection Science and Tissue Science services are provided by our pathology partner Synnovis. 

Clinical biochemistry

Clinical biochemistry as pioneered the use of new markers of cardiac damage particularly during surgery and developed the measurement of cardiac hormones for the diagnosis of heart failure. Find out more

Clinical genetics and genomics

The clinical genetics and genomics laboratory is a joint venture between Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals and the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London. It provides diagnostic genetic testing for families and individuals at risk of inherited disease.  Find out more

Haematology

Haematology has acquired expertise in the investigation of haemostatic disorders in patients who have, or are, undergoing cardiac surgery. We have actively participated in programmes to reduce the use of transfused blood. Find out more

Microbiology

Our microbiology team includes leading experts in the rapid diagnosis of atypical pneumonias and employ molecular techniques for the diagnosis of tuberculosis, which greatly reduces turnaround time for diagnosis. Find out more

Histopathology and cytology

The histopathology and cytology service specialises in the diagnosis of lung tumours and interstitial lung diseases, heart and lung transplant rejection, vascular and cardiac diseases. Find out more.  

Phlebotomy

Blood samples are collected by phlebotomists in the outpatient department and on the wards.

Tissue typing (histocompatibility and immunogenetics)

The tissue typing laboratory provides histocompatibility and immunogenetics (H&I) services primarily for the cardiothoracic programme. Find out more
