Paediatric outpatients

The department specialises in the care of children, aged birth to 16 years, with heart and lung problems who may require medical treatment, surgical repair or post-surgical follow-up.

Our department philosophy reflects our belief that children should be cared for within a framework of family-centred care and therefore we encourage parents and families to be present during all consultations and participate in agreeing the child's treatment plan.

About the department

The dedicated paediatric outpatient department is a relaxed and friendly child-centred environment. Consultant-led clinics in paediatric cardiology, paediatric respiratory and inherited cardiac conditions are held within the department. There are also clinics run by our rehabilitation and therapies team; including speech and language, physiotherapy and dietetics. Many of our clinics are multidisciplinary, so you may see doctors, nurses and therapists during your clinic visit.

If any of the children need to be admitted to hospital for treatment this admission will occur at Royal Brompton Hospital where all paediatric inpatient care is given.

Well-established clinical governance and audit programmes are in place to ensure the delivery of a high standard of medical and nursing care and patient satisfaction.

Referrals

The paediatric department is a tertiary referral centre for children with cardiac and respiratory disease. Referrals are mainly accepted from district general and teaching hospitals in north-west London and Hertfordshire, although children from abroad can also be referred and treated privately at the hospital.
