Updates in the Inherited Cardiac Conditions service

Last updated: July 2025

This page tells you about important changes to the cardiomyopathy service, which is part of the Inherited Cardiac Conditions (ICC) service.

To continue providing high-quality care while meeting growing demand and increasing patient complexity, we’re making some important changes. These changes will help improve how we deliver care in the cardiomyopathy service to better meet the needs of patients and their family members.

In late 2023, we upgraded our electronic patient record system. We have also introduced video appointments and specialist nurse-led clinics to offer more flexibility and capacity.

Our aims

  • Continue to safely respond to the increasing demand within the cardiomyopathy service.
  • Ensure all patients receive the same access to expert cardiomyopathy care.
  • Improve the efficiency and coordination of patient care, and effectively communicate results with patients and other their GPs.
  • To work together with local services as part of a shared care approach.
  • Introduce patient initiated follow-up (PIFU) where appropriate.
  • Ensure the best possible experience for our patients and encourage any feedback about their care.

The planned changes will not affect the quality of care we provide. However, we apologise for any inconvenience you may experience as we make improvements to our service. The key changes are highlighted below.

Your appointment

We may need to reschedule your next appointment and we will let you know if this is the case. This will be a one-time change, and nothing else about your consultation will be affected.

Who you will see

Your clinic appointment may be with a consultant cardiologist or another member of inherited cardiac conditions team, such as a clinical nurse specialist or a genetic counsellor.

To manage waiting times, your appointment may be moved to a different day of the week than you're used to.

Test results

The cardiomyopathy team reviews the results of any tests you have. Based on the results, we may write to you with feedback and a plan instead of arranging an in-person or a video appointment. If any action is required, this will be managed in the standard way and may involve a consultation.

The cardiomyopathy team works together as a multi-disciplinary team to review all patient cases individually and make informed decisions about care and treatment plans. Ongoing care and treatment may be delivered through a different healthcare provider - for example, at a specialist centre closer to you.

You can use the MyChart patient app to view clinic letters and test results. Please note that test results should always be interpreted by a healthcare professional. If you have any questions about your results, please discuss these at your appointment.
