Our centre is a world leader in the diagnosis, management and treatment of lung disease. We treat patients from across the UK and abroad for the full range of respiratory disorders and have one of the world’s largest lung disease patient populations.

As a leading European respiratory research centre, we have, with our partner the National Heart and Lung Institute, pioneered research that has set national standards for treatment, for instance for sleep services and ventilatory support.

Asthma and allergy

We have expertise in the treatment of difficult asthma, allergic asthma, corticosteroid-resistant asthma, occupational asthma, allergies, rhinitis and other nasal problems.

Interstitial lung disease / fibrosing lung disease

ILD is a term used for a group of more than 100 separate disorders that commonly affect the tissue and space around the air sacs in the lung.

We diagnose and manage all forms of this condition, including sarcoidosis, lung problems in rheumatological diseases and vasculitis. High-resolution CT (computerised tomography) is used for diagnosis and prognosis.

Chronic lung infection

We treat all types of lung infection and have special expertise in bronchiectasisprimary ciliary dyskinesia, antibody deficiency, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillus and mycobacterial infections.

Occupational and environmental lung disease

We have the busiest occupational and environmental lung disease service in Europe, dealing with occupational asthma, asbestos-related disease, extrinsic allergic alveolitis, pneumoconiosis including silicosis and hard metal disease.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

We treat COPD through medication, nutritional advice, pulmonary rehabilitation and other methods. Our research helped establish the national guidelines for dealing with COPD and we are currently investigating lung volume reduction treatment.

We see patients with difficult-to-manage acute and chronic respiratory failure admitted from hospitals from around the UK.

Ventilation at home

We provide home ventilation support for adults and children with neuromuscular and chest wall conditions such as muscular dystrophy and curvature of the spine. We have over 1,000 patients in this programme, making it the largest in Europe.

Sleep-disordered breathing

We are one of the three largest centres for continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment for sleep apnoea. We have a dedicated sleep clinic for investigating the nature of patients' sleep disorders.

Cystic fibrosis

The Royal Brompton Hospital Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre is one of the largest centres in Europe and treats approximately 600 adults from the age of 17 years. We aim to provide high quality, evidence-based healthcare in a supportive and caring environment.

Respiratory medicine at Harefield Hospital

The department of respiratory medicine at Harefield Hospital focuses on outpatient, day case and community respiratory services. It offers general outpatient services that provide support and advice to primary care colleagues and full respiratory physiology resources. 

It also holds specialist respiratory clinics provided by eight consultants. These include:

The department is supported by specialist nurses and physiotherapists, and the therapies team at Harefield Hospital. It works closely with respiratory medicine colleagues at Royal Brompton Hospital and our four dedicated thoracic surgeons, and provides respiratory support and advice to our cardiology, surgical, ITU and transplant colleagues at Harefield Hospital.
