The service

The aim of the high-risk service is to provide a gold standard care to enable women with pre-existing cardiac conditions, or a cardiac condition which arise during pregnancy, to achieve a successful pregnancy and birth.

This is a specialist multi-disciplinary clinic led by consultant cardiologists and obstetricians. 

The service provides pre-pregnancy advice and pregnancy care for patients with congenital heart disease, acquired heart disease and inherited cardiac conditions. 

The service is provided jointly with the high-risk maternity team from Chelsea & Westminster Hospital

What happens on the day of the clinic

Each patient is reviewed by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of an obstetrician, cardiologist and Clinical Nurse Specialist. In addition once a month the consultant anaesthetist attends clinic to facilitate delivery planning.

On the day of clinic patients may also have other tests including an ECG, echo or a fetal ultrasound.

Who should be referred?  

Any woman affected with heart disease or has a strong family history of a cardiac condition referred by a cardiology or a maternity service.

When should someone be referred?

We recommend referring any woman with heart disease considering pregnancy to attend our preconception counselling clinic and when a patient or local midwifery/cardiology team know of pregnancy as early as possible.
