Quality and Safety of Organs Intended for Transplantation Regulations 2012

The Quality and Safety of Organs Intended for Transplantation Regulations 2012 transposed the European Union Organ Donation Directive (EUODD) into UK law. The purpose of the EUODD was to set minimum standards for protecting the quality and safety of organs to be used for transplantation, harmonising the European approach.

The regulations require any UK organisation carrying out the following activities to be licensed by the Human Tissue Authority:

  • organ and donor characterisation
  • retrieval of an organ
  • preservation of an organ
  • making arrangements to transport an organ
  • implantation of an organ.

Harefield Hospital is licensed under the regulations for all of the above activities. Read more information about this licence.
