Traceability of human tissue being used for research

“Traceability” refers to having complete information about every step in the pathway of obtaining and using organs, tissues or cells for research, from consent through to use and eventual disposal.

The documented traceability of tissue is one of the Human Tissue Authority’s governance and quality systems standards for all licensed establishments. It is therefore important that all staff actively ensure the traceability of human tissue being used for research.

Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust uses tissue tracking software to document traceability of tissue stored for use in research.

The policy for the traceability and use of tracking software provides clarity on what must be logged on the tissue tracking software and when.
