Friends of Royal Brompton Hospital

Friends of Royal Brompton Hospital was an independent charity that raised funds for projects around the hospital. It recently joined with Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity so that together the two organisations can make a bigger difference for people with heart and lung conditions.

The Friends ran the on-site florist shop Brompton Flowers, which sold second-hand books and clothes, and a kiosk in Fulham Road wing. They also ran a trolley service, going straight to patients' bedsides, in both Sydney St and Fulham Road wings.

Friends of Royal Brompton Hospital also supported the work of Harefield Hospital by means of voluntary service, setting up a refreshment pavilion and small shop and supporting the hospital by financing select projects.

Volunteers make 34,000 PPE gowns

In response to a shortage of surgical gowns across the country at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, clinical colleagues from across the Trust took matters into their own hands and developed a blueprint to create our own supply chain. This was then built upon by the Trust's finance department who went on to mastermind a production process to transform surgical drapes into surgical gowns and recruit hundreds of volunteers to produce the much-needed PPE. The film below offers a glimpse into the making of the gowns and hears from some of the fantastic volunteers and organisers who made this possible.

Joining forces with Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity

In January 2023 it was announced that Friends of Royal Brompton Hospital will be joining forces with Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity.

Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals Charity will continue to make grants on behalf of Friends of Royal Brompton Hospital and will make sure that their legacy is preserved into the future. Together the two charities will be able to fund many more projects to help heart and lung patients.
