What we do
The Lung and Heart Day Unit provides care for patients who are expected to be discharged on the same day. We treat patients with a range of long-term lung and cardiac conditions including:
- Congenital heart disease (adult and transitional)
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD)
- Cystic fibrosis
- Host defence /respiratory infectious diseases
- Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD)
- Occupational asthma
- Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD)
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Severe asthma
- Sleep and ventilation disorders
We provide a range of services, including:
- Asthma biologic therapy
- Allergy services
- Clinical reviews with consultants, nurse specialists, psychologists, dieticians, palliative care teams, pharmacists and physiotherapists
- Diagnostic testing, including 6 minute walk tests, FENO, home monitoring services (video/telephone consultations)
- Intravenous or subcutaneous immunology treatment
- Home Intravenous antibiotic therapy (OPAT) services
- Thoracic services post-surgery review of drains and wounds
- Ventilation and CPAP clinics
- Intravenous iron replacement clinic

Your appointment
Our appointment times are flexible and you can choose to have a morning or afternoon appointment.
When you arrive at the unit, please report to the front desk and take a seat, a member of our admin team will admit you.
You should expect to be on the unit for at least a couple of hours. The duration of your appointment depends on the treatment you are having. You may wish bring a book or something to keep you occupied between waiting periods. We appreciate your patience during this time.
If you are feeling unwell or displaying any symptoms that might be infectious, you should not come to the hopsital. Please contact us to reschedule your appointment.
Royal Brompton hospital is a postgraduate teaching hospital. This means that sometimes students and trainees may be present at your appointment. If you would rather not have students involved in your care, please tell us. This will not have any effect on your care or treatment.
Bringing your child to your appointment
We ask that you do not bring your child to your appointment. This is to help prevent the spread of infections.
If you need to bring your child with you to your appointment, please let us know in advance so we can make suitable arrangements.
If you are planning to bring a service animal, for example an assisted guide dog, to your appointment, please let us know in advance. Unfortunately, we do not allow pets on the unit.
Eating and drinking
We will let you know if you can eat or drink before your appointment.
Hot drinks are available during the day, and we provide a selection sandwiches, fruits and yoghurt for lunch. You can also bring your own food if you wish.
If you have any specific dietary requirements, please contact us the day before your appointment.
After your appointment
Before you are discharged, we will give you information about your aftercare and arrange any follow-up appointments you may need. You will receive confirmation of any follow-up appointments via email, text or post, depending on your communication preferences.
You should not expect to stay in the hospital overnight. However, if we feel you need to be monitored for a longer period, we will discuss this with you.
