Professor Thomas Lüscher voted President Elect for the Board of the European Society of Cardiology

Professor Thomas Lüscher, director of research, education and development, and cardiology consultant at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, has been elected by members of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), one of the world’s largest medical societies, to serve as President Elect for the Board 2022-2024.

The presidential trio of the society comprises of the President Elect, President and Past President. His appointment as President Elect therefore means that Professor Lüscher will subsequently be able to lead the ESC Board as President from 2024-2026 and as Past President from 2026-2028.

The ESC comprises 57 National Cardiac Societies and 47 Affiliated National Cardiac Societies from across Europe and the wider world. In total, the ESC has over 100,000 members.

Professor Lüscher comments on his appointment: “I am deeply hounored and delighted to be able to serve this outstanding society, but respectful of the challenges ahead in a changing environment in medicine and cardiology in particular. I am also proud to be able to act as an ambassador of Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals in the cardiovascular community.”

Professor Lüscher’s clinical expertise includes preventional medicine for conditions such as hypertension, lipid disorders and diabetes; coronary artery disease, including angina pectoris and myocardial infarction; heart failure; pharmacotherapy; cardiac catheterisations and more.

He has mentored many physicians and scientists across the globe and has received many awards, research prizes and lectureships worldwide.

Professor Lüscher has sat on several editorial boards including the European Heart Journal, the ESC’s flagship publication. His work has been published extensively with over 500 research papers, over 200 reviews and numerous book chapters on the topic of cardiovascular medicine.
