Dr Vasilis Kouranos completed his training in respiratory medicine in 2013 at the General Hospital of Thoracic Diseases, the largest university hospital in Athens. 

He completed his masters degree in Thoracic Oncology in 2011 after a publication about antibiotic prophylaxis of chemotherapy-induced neutropenic lung cancer patients.

Dr Kouranos' PhD at the University of Athens focused on screening CMR patients with biopsy-proven sarcoidosis. He was awarded a research scholarship grant for the study and his PhD was awarded in 2017 after his work was published in a high-impact journal which influences current practice in the field.

After his PhD, Dr Kouranos joined the Royal Brompton hospital as a clinical research fellow to Professor Athol Wells and in 2016 he was offered the role of senior clinical fellow and in parallel, acting consultant in the interstitial lung disease department. 

Clinical Expertise

Dr Kouranos completed a fellowship in interstitial lung disease and sarcoidosis at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He has a sub-specialist expertise in sarcoidosis and particularly cardiac sarcoidosis, which was the subject of his PhD thesis.

He has great experience in management of patients with sarcoidosis, interstitial lung disease and pulmonary fibrosis. He also manages patients with general respiratory problems such as:

  • an unexplained cough
  • asthma
  • bronchitis
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • respiratory infections
  • bronchiectasis. 

Research interests

Dr Kouranos's PhD focused on the screening of cardiac sarcoidosis with cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and he has also been awarded an MSC in thoracic oncology. 

He is actively involved in clinical research and part of his research activities he has co-designed and participated as principal investigator in clinical trials in treatment of pulmonary and cardiac sarcoidosis. He is also the course organiser of the Annual Cardiac Sarcoidosis symposium with national and international delegates. 

Publications

Dr Kouranos is the author of over 60 peer-reviewed articles, including original papers, editorials, abstracts and book chapters. He has developed the Royal Brompton Hospital Cardiac Sarcoidosis Registry, which is the largest in the world.
