Biography

Dr Joyce Wong studied at the University of London. She completed her specialist training in cardiology and general internal medicine at St Bartholomew's, the London Chest and Royal Brompton hospitals.

She obtained her PhD from St Bartholomew's and London Medical School in 2004, in the field of inflammatory modulation of atherosclerosis.

Areas of expertise

Dr Wong is a consultant cardiologist and lead clinician in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) at Harefield Hospital.

She specialises in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the heart and blood vessels, looking at common and unusual forms of heart failure and other cardiac diseases. She works closely with multidisciplinary conference panels to review patients who may need angioplasty, heart surgery and cardiac transplantation.

Research interests

Dr Wong's research interests include the role of CMR in:

  • coronary artery disease and its effects on the myocardium
  • inherited cardiovascular disease
  • inflammatory heart disease
  • assessment of cardiac pathophysiology in heart and lung transplantation. 

She has collaborated on landmark clinical trials such as: 

  • MR-INFORM - showing stress CMR to be as good as invasive pressure wire studies in helping to manage stable angina patients. 
  • CVLPRIT - assessing how CMR helps to manage heart attack patients with coronary artery disease in more than one artery.

Teaching 

Dr Wong lectures on her specialisms to a mix of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Dr Wong has authored and co-authored many papers published in high-profile journals including the: 

  • New England Journal of Medicine
  • Journal of the American College of Cardiology
  • European Heart Journal.
