Biography

Dr Georgia Keramida completed her nuclear medicine specialty training in Athens from 2003 to 2008. She was appointed to several consultant locum posts in Athens before moving to Brighton in 2012 to take up the post of clinical research fellow in the Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre at the University of Sussex, which provides the clinical PET/CT service across a large part of Sussex.

During this time she undertook a PhD at Brighton and Sussex Medical School and continued her clinical practice in the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where she was an honorary consultant in nuclear medicine.

Clinical interests

Dr Keramida is a consultant in nuclear medicine at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, and her clinical interests include:

  • developing the nuclear medicine service by expanding the use of lymphoscintigraphy
  • Se-75-HCAT scanning for the diagnosis of bile acid diarrhoea
  • In-111-labelled leucocyte scanning for orthopaedic infections
  • Cr-51-EDTA for measuring glomerular filtration rate for oncologists in local hospitals and an institution with a busy transplant practice.

Research interests

Dr Keramida completed an MSc in Athens (2009-2011) in nuclear oncology, receiving a distinction. Her PhD (2012-2015) focused on the use of F-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) to study hepatic glucose utilisation in patients with hepatic steatosis, and texture analysis of PET and CT scans to diagnose hepatic inflammation.

Her future research plans are to:

  • explore the potential role of imaging radiolabelled leucocyte traffic in acute and chronic pulmonary inflammation
  • use inhaled radiolabelled substrates of multi-drug resistance proteins to quantify multi-drug resistance in the lungs, especially lung transplants
  • further her interests in FDG PET for the diagnosis of hepatic inflammation.

Publications

Dr Keramida has published on the subject of FDG PET/CT in hepatic steatosis and has had papers published in journals such as Journal of Clinical Oncology and European Radiology. She is a frequent reviewer for European Radiology and has reviewed submissions to Oncotarget and PLoS ONE.
