Dr Caroline Chenu is a consultant in congenital surgery at Royal Brompton Hospital. She graduated medical school at Aix-Marseille II University, and received her Doctorate of Medicine with highest honours at Toulouse III University in 2011.

Dr Chenu went on to complete her postgraduate training in cardiac surgery in Toulouse and Marseille, before receiving her research master (MSc) with the highest qualification in surgical science. She was the winner of the ‘Surgeon of the year’ award for her research project in France, 2010.

Dr Chenu took up a locum consultant surgeon position at Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital in Paris, before being appointed as a consultant congenital cardiac surgeon in Marseille in 2015. She accepted a consultant surgeon position in cardiac surgery at La Timone Children Hospital in Marseille.

Since 2016, Dr Chenu has been registered with the GMC on the specialist register and worked as a clinical fellow for the paediatric and congenital heart surgery team at Royal Brompton Hospital. She now works as a consultant surgeon at Royal Brompton Hospital.

Dr Chenu has been invited as a member of the French Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (SFCTCV) and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS). She has been published in several international peer-reviewed journals, and has spoken at international conferences.

Clinical expertise

Dr Chenu’s clinical expertise includes:

  • Paediatric and congenital cardiac surgery, with a special interest in neonatal surgery
  • Hybrid procedures (combining surgery and cardiac catheterism procedures)
  • Mechanical circulatory support (ECMO and ventricular assisted device) and heart transplantation.

Research interests

Her interests and expertise are in surgical learning curve and simulation programs.
