Dr Amrit Lota

Consultant cardiologist

Dr Amrit Lota is a consultant cardiologist based at Royal Brompton Hospital, specialising in inflammatory heart diseases, cardiomyopathy and advanced cardiac imaging. 

Dr Amrit Lota studied medicine at the University of Oxford, graduating with a first-class degree in Physiological Sciences in 2005 and receiving several academic prizes. He completed his cardiology training in London before further developing his expertise at Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States. 

In 2020, Dr Lota was awarded a PhD from Imperial College London, funded by the British Heart Foundation. His research focussed on advanced cardiac imaging and clinical genetics to improve how myocarditis and cardiomyopathy are diagnosed and treated. 

Dr Lota now leads a specialist clinical service for patients with myopericarditis, recognising the growing overlap with underlying cardiomyopathy and systemic autoimmune diseases.. He was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 2023 and is actively involved in training future doctors.

Research 

Dr Lota continues to lead innovation in the early diagnosis, risk assessment and treatment of patients with acute myopericarditis, dilated cardiomyopathy and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. His current research builds on an internationally recruited cohort of patients with acute myocarditis. By integrating national datasets with AI modelling, Dr Lota aims to improve understanding of heart muscle diseases and develop predictive tools to help prevent future complications.

Teaching

Dr Lota is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Imperial College London National Heart & Lung Institute - Faculty of Medicine.

Publications

Dr Lota has published more than 90 scientific papers since 2008. You can read Dr Lota's journal articles and conference papers on the Imperial College London publications library.
