Why choose us?

Here are some of the reasons why patients choose us, with performance figures and achievements for 2017/18.

We are the largest specialist heart and lung centre in the United Kingdom and one of the largest in Europe.

Last year, we cared for more than 200,000 patients in our outpatient clinics and nearly 40,000 patients of all ages on our wards.

Surgery taking placeHeart

The adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) unit at Royal Brompton is one of the largest specialised centres in the world, caring for patients with a variety of conditions.

Our teams are based around the following themes:

Our experts care for around 100,000 patients and carry out more than 2,000 outpatient appointments each year, with many patients receiving care from the first days of their lives, through into adulthood.

The unit is also a major research facility, producing more highly-cited research papers than any other, and a world-leading training centre for cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and other clinicians.

Lung

Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals are world leaders in the diagnosis, management and treatment of lung disease.

Patients from the UK as well as overseas are treated for the full range of respiratory disorders including:

Our teams run the largest interstitial lung disease clinic in the UK, the largest asthma clinic in London and the south-east, and the biggest occupational lung disease service in the UK. We are also home to the largest cystic fibrosis clinic in the UK, and the largest centre for surgical treatment of lung cancer.

A doctor examining a young patientAn international reputation for our specialist paediatric services

We are a leading centre for the treatment of paediatric congenital heart disease (CHD), inherited cardiac conditions, fetal cardiology, paediatric cystic fibrosis and severe asthma, as well as rare lung conditions such as primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). We are the largest UK centre for children with heart rhythm problems and the third largest for paediatric cardiac surgery.

Our children’s and adult teams liaise closely to ensure a seamless transition between services as a child reaches teenage years. This is increasingly common as survival rates for conditions such as CHD, cystic fibrosis and severe asthma continue to improve year-on-year.

A successful ongoing partnership with neighbouring Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, delivered via formal service level agreements, enables us to provide any additional care on-site that our young patients might need – for example, gastroenterology, ear nose and throat surgery, and other general surgery.

Top European research centre

We are Europe's top-ranked respiratory research centre. Last year, our researchers recruited over 2,700 patients into 174 research studies.

We are England’s leading NHS trust for cardiovascular, respiratory and critical care research and have been since 1997.

In 2017/18:

  • 862 papers were published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, such as The Lancet, Nature, and The New England Journal of Medicine
  • More than £7.9 million was raised in external funding for research, from bodies including the National Institute for Health Research, Wellcome Trust, British Lung Foundation and the private sector
  • Nearly 2,300 patients took part in 200 Trust research programmes – including global studies sponsored by industry, trials involving new medicines or devices, and international registry studies.

MRI scannerState-of-the-art equipment

We have a track record of significant investment in imaging technology, including the installation of the most sophisticated CT scanner in Europe. It can scan a chest in 0.6 seconds and the heart in just two heartbeats. In many cases, such technology allows diagnosis without the need for invasive procedures.

Last year, we carried out more than 15,000 CT scans at the Trust, as well as more than 18,400 echocardiograms at Royal Brompton Hospital and over 13,000 at Harefield Hospital.

The cath lab at Harefield is one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in Europe. The advanced equipment includes a remote-controlled robot that uses high-tech 3D mapping technology for increased precision when treating patients with atrial fibrillation and other complex arrhythmias. It also allows for precise catheter manipulation and reduction of exposure to X-rays for patients and staff.

The blood sciences laboratory at Royal Brompton Hospital, the most advanced of its kind in Europe, offers faster and more accurate results through a streamlined, contamination-free testing process.

Pathology

We are a national and international referral centre for cardiac and pulmonary pathology, offering a unique service to users and other healthcare trusts.
