This is a type of scan that uses a small amount of radioactive material to help us see clearer images of your body.

We use this scan to check the lining of your lungs. For the test, you will breathe in an aerosol which contains the radioactive material. It takes about five minutes to take effect.

You will then lie down on a couch for about 40 minutes. We will use our specialist cameras to take the images we need of your lungs. It is very important that you stay as still as you can during this time, so we can get clear images.

The test should take no longer than an hour.

There are currently no related conditions associated with this test.

Radiation risk

The amount of radioactive material we use in this scan is very small, and we strongly believe that the benefits of the scan far outweigh the risks.

But we ask that you do not bring children with you into the department so that they are not exposed to unnecessary radiation.

Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, or think you might be pregnant, you must tell us before the scan.

You should also tell us if you are breastfeeding or have very young children.

If you are diabetic

You won't need to change your routine for this scan, but bring in your insulin when you come in as well as a snack if you need to.

Side effects and results

You will not be sleepy because of the aerosol we give you to breathe in for the scan, so it won't prevent you from driving a car or continuing normal activities.

After the scan is complete, you can eat and drink as you normally would. You don't need to keep yourself in isolation but we recommend that you don't spend an extended amount of time in close contact with children for the rest of the day. This is to avoid exposing them to any unnecessary radiation.

Your results will be sent to your consultant.
