Academic promotion for Trust consultant

14 October 2025

A Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals consultant has been recognised by Imperial College London’s National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI) as part of its 2025 academic promotions, which celebrate the work of academics in the fields of medicine, engineering, natural sciences and business.

Dr Peter George, respiratory consultant, was appointed professor of practice in respiratory medicine, with the appointment made in recognition of significant professional expertise and impactful contributions to the university’s mission.

Together, Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals and NHLI form one of the most successful partnerships in England for both respiratory and cardiovascular research, with many consultants holding joint clinical and academic roles, contributing to both patient care and cutting-edge research.

Professor George is leading research in several areas including in the use of artificial intelligence and digital biomarkers to improve the assessment and early detection of interstitial lung disease (ILD). Working closely with industry and academic partners, his work also focuses on developing CT based imaging biomarkers to predict disease progression and identify patients at risk earlier.

His other areas of research interest include better understanding the mechanisms driving ILD including the influence of the pulmonary vasculature in driving pulmonary fibrosis, the role of gastroesophageal reflux disease and hiatus hernia in the development of ILD and the use of national healthcare datasets to evaluate ILD outcomes, treatment effects, and health inequalities.
