Surgery for aortic root aneurysms traditionally involves replacing the aortic valve with a prosthetic one. However, a repairing a natural valve is always preferred.

What is it?

A new technique called valve-sparing aortic root replacement (VSSR) is a cardiac procedure to treat aneurysms and prevent aortic dissection. It replaces the aortic root without replacing the aortic valve eliminating the need for lifelong therapy and the potential risks of using prosthetic valves.

During the procedure a graft is attached to the valve to replace the aortic roof, while allowing the valve to be preserved.
