Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals have once again been recognised among the world’s leading specialist centres for cardiac and respiratory care by international publication, Newsweek.
In its annual global survey of more than 85,000 medical professionals across more than 30 countries, Royal Brompton was ranked as the number one specialist hospital in the UK for cardiac surgery, cardiology, and pulmonology - for the fourth consecutive year.
Its sister hospital, Harefield, also achieved outstanding recognition, ranking 6th in the UK for cardiac surgery for the third year running and moving up from 5th to 4th for cardiology.
On the global stage, both hospitals performed exceptionally. Royal Brompton ranked 13th in the world for cardiac surgery, 10th for cardiology, and 6th for pulmonology - the only UK hospital to appear in the global top 50 across all three categories. Harefield Hospital was also listed among the top 100 global hospitals for cardiac specialties, ranking 82nd.
These rankings reflect the hospitals’ long-standing reputation for pioneering care, medical innovation, and clinical excellence. From the first open-heart surgery performed by Royal Brompton surgeon Bill Cleland in 1953, to Europe’s first combined heart and lung transplant by Professor Magdi Yacoub in 1983, the hospitals have consistently pushed the boundaries of cardiac and respiratory medicine.
Today, the hospitals’ teams continue to lead the way - advancing patient care through cutting-edge imaging techniques, world-class research, and clinical trials that deliver kinder, more effective treatments.
Commenting on the announcement, Dr Richard Grocott-Mason, Chief Executive of Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals adult services, said:
“It is fantastic that our teams have been recognised by peers across the world. Our hospitals are well known historically for pushing boundaries and innovating when it comes to cardiac and respiratory medicine, and this survey highlights that they have built their well-earned reputations for decades by continuing to innovate and deliver outstanding care.”
