We provide care for patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH), which includes:
- assessment and diagnosis of people with suspected or confirmed pulmonary hypertension
- development of a management plan
We see patients who have suspected or confirmed PH due to:
- chronic heart and lung disease
- chronic thromboembolic disease
- miscellaneous causes.
- uncertain causes
Our service is run by the Royal Brompton pulmonary vascular unit. It's one of 9 centres that make up the UK and Ireland’s national pulmonary hypertension service.
We partner with a network of centres across England to provide a shared care service. This helps reduce waiting times for assessment and treatment.

Appointments
Your first appointment will be at Royal Brompton Hospital. Appointments take place on Tuesday mornings, Thursday afternoons and Friday mornings.
How to get an appointment
We accept referrals from GPs and other health professionals.
Information for referrers
GP referrals
You can make a referral via the NHS e-referral service (e-RS).
Consultant or internal referrals
Please email your referral letter to us. You must have completed the following tests and included the results in the referral:
echocardiogram (report and images), taken within 6 months of referral.
BNP or NT-ProBNP, taken within 3 months of referral
lung function test including transfer factor, taken within 6 months of referral
CT-PA, taken within 6 months of referral

Urgent referrals
We aim to see urgent cases within 2 weeks of referral. If a referral needs to be fast-tracked, please call the Royal Brompton Hospital switchboard and ask for the on call pulmonary hypertension consultant.
Before your appointment
You'll see someone from our pulmonary hypertension team. You may have a number of tests on the day, including:
- chest x-ray
- echocardiogram (echo)
- electrocardiogram (ECG)
Sometimes, you may need to return on another day for further tests.
After your appointment
We will discuss your diagnosis and treatment options with you. Our aim is to diagnose your condition and help you manage it with the ongoing support of your GP or referring consulant.
You may have follow up appointments:
- to talk through the results of any tests
- to start treatment
- to attend outpatient clinics for regular reviews
