The Clinical Trials and Evaluation Unit (CTEU) is the dedicated clinical trials unit of the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust (RBHT). CTEU has over 14 years’ experience in designing, conducting and reporting clinical trials and other well-designed studies in respiratory and cardiovascular disease. CTEU is led by Dr Marcus Flather, Consultant Cardiologist and Deputy Director of Research at RBHT, and has a multi-disciplinary core team of 15 staff comprising, clinicians, nurses, scientists, data management, business and administrative support.
Our research areas include:
CTEU has joined the International Centre for Circulatory Health (ICCH) at St Mary’s, (Professor Neil Poulter and Professor Peter Sever), the Academic Department of Vascular Surgery at Charing Cross (Professor Janet Powell) and the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at ICCH (Professor David Wood) to form the Imperial Clinical Trials Unit – Cardiovascular and Metabolic (ICTU-CM) which specialises in cardiovascular and metabolic clinical trials research.
The formation of ICTU-CM has enabled the four research groups to share research ideas, interests and skills and work to common standard operating procedures. The critical mass of staff provides stability and continuity for research projects. The range of skills provides strength when applying for grants and ensures all the necessary components for conducting a successful research programme are available “in-house”.
ICTU-CM is now forming the cornerstone for a wider Imperial Clinical Trials Unit (ICTU). The Co-Directors of ICTU are Professor Neil Pouter and Professor Deborah Ashby and the Unit has a clearly defined management structure and research strategy. ICTU will build on the strength and success of ICTU-CM to include clinical trials across all disease areas. ICTU has received provisional registration from the UKCRC for Clinical Trials Units. RBHT is represented at all levels of the management and operations of ICTU.
CTEU, as a co-founding trials unit of ICTU-CM, is also now part of the newly created ICTU. This supports and reflects the partnership between the Trust and Imperial that is already established through the Biomedical Research Units in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Medicine.
CTEU, while part of ICTU, remains a key department of the RBHT and will continue to work on and expand the portfolio of national and international trials sponsored by the Trust and academic and industry partners.
