About the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)
The National Institute for Health Research provides the framework through which the research staff and research infrastructure of the NHS in England is positioned, maintained and managed as a national research facility. The aim of the NIHR is to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research. The BRUs are contributing to this aim by building on the best research leaders and their teams so enabling their host institutions to achieve, or further develop, critical mass in a priority research area.
The BRUs have been established to undertake translational clinical research in priority areas of high disease burden and clinical need. The units allow first class research, high-quality patient care, education and training to take place in world class facilities. This will benefit patients, society, the NHS and all our stakeholders.
