Asthma and allergy
Expertise: Treatment for difficult asthma, allergic asthma, corticosteroid resistant asthma, occupational asthma, high-dependency unit for acute asthma admissions, general allergy, rhinitis and other nasal problems.
Additional information: Responsible for the development of several widely-used asthma and allergy treatments. Around 400 asthma patients admitted annually, many more attended outpatient clinics.
Chronic lung infection
Expertise: All types of lung infection treated with special expertise in bronchiectasis, primary ciliary dyskinesia, antibody deficiency, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillus and mycobacterial infections.
Additional information: Over 650 patients treated annually for lung infection. Protocols developed which are now used internationally.
Fibrosing/diffuse lung disease
(interstitial lung disease)
Expertise: Diagnosis and management of all forms of interstitial lung disease such as fibrosing lung disease, sarciodosis, lung problems in rheumatological diseases and vasculitis. High resolution CT (computerised tomography) used for diagnosis and prognosis.
Additional information: Trust experts lecture worldwide on the management of diffuse lung disease and host international teaching events at Royal Brompton, which has one of the largest lung disease patient populations in the world (1,700).
Occupational and environmental lung disease
Expertise: Occupational asthma, asbestosrelated disease, extrinsic allergic alveolitis, pneumoconiosis including silicosis and hard metal disease.
Additional information: Worldwide reputation developed after extensive research studies over the past 30 years. Busiest occupational and environmental lung disease service in Europe.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD - chronic bronchitis and emphysema)
Expertise: Comprehensive services to treat COPD including medication, vaccination, nutritional advice and pulmonary rehabilitation (tailored exercise programmes with advice on lung health and coping with breathlessness).
Additional information: Research into lung volume reduction treatment currently underway. National guidelines on COPD, and on lung reduction surgery, reflect outcomes of this Royal Brompton/Imperial research.
Chronic and acute respiratory failure
Expertise: Particular expertise in treating chronic and recurrent acute respiratory failure associated with COPD, nueromuscular conditions (including congenital defects and motor neurone disease) and chest wall conditions.
Additional information: Patients with difficult to manage acute respiratory failure admitted from hospitals around the UK and internationally, for expert treatment in adult intensive care units.
Domiciliary ventilation
Expertise: Respiratory support at home for adults and children with neuromuscular and chest wall conditions such as muscular dystrophy and curvature of the spine.
Additional information: Largest European centre providing respiratory support at home (domiciliary ventilation) with some 1,000 patients in this programme.
Sleep disordered breathing
Expertise: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure treatment (CPAP) for sleep apnoea following diagnostic sleep studies.
Additional information: One of the UK’s three largest centres for CPAP, treating 3,000 for obstructive sleep apnoea. Extensive research conducted into sleep disordered breathing.
Cystic fibrosis
Expertise: Comprehensive treatment for patients with cystic fibrosis in the largest cystic fibrosis centre in Europe.
Additional information: Trust experts have pioneered major advances in treatment of the condition. Over 1,000 patients currently treated.
