How we diagnose, investigate

and treat heart and lung

conditions

Respiratory medicine

We welcome patients with around 50 different groups of respiratory diseases to Royal Brompton Hospital each year. Our areas of expertise include asthma, fibrosing lung disease, occupational and environmental lung disease, chronic lung infection, acute respiratory failure, cystic fibrosis, domiciliary ventilation and sleep disorders.

We have an international reputation for the diagnosis and management of lung disease and for our research programmes, the result of over 160 years’ experience.

Heart failure and congenital disease

Our consultant surgeons offer the full range of surgical procedures and have particular expertise in complex cardiac surgery, including transplantation.

Our cardiologists treat a wide range of cardiac diseases using both invasive and non-invasive procedures. Royal Brompton has one of the largest adult congenital heart disease units in the country, offering foetal, paediatric and adult services.

Thoracic surgery

We are a major centre for lung, chest and oesophageal cancers and non malignant thoracic surgery, and is the leading provider of complex thoracic surgery in the UK. Our multi-disciplinary teams include surgeons, histopathologists, radiologists, specialist nurses, palliative care specialists and oncologists, allowing each patient to have a ‘consensus treatment plan’ with immediate access to the best treatment available.

Services for children

Royal Brompton Hospital is an internationally recognised centre for the surgical treatment of neonatal and infant congenital heart disease. Our paediatric work covers respiratory medicine, cardiology, foetal cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery.

An extensive multi-disciplinary team supports the nursing and medical staff.

Babies and children are cared for in our specialist paediatric unit.  This offers play and schoolrooms and is specially designed to minimise the unease children – and their parents - might feel when staying in a hospital.

Our children’s intensive care unit is also located here, offering immediate accessibility 24 hours a day.  In the recent national assessment of services for children we achieved an ‘excellent’ rating, and our foetal cardiology service has recently been expanded. We have accommodation for parents located on the floor above the children’s ward and in other parts of the hospital.

Clinical support

The Department of Critical Care and Anaesthesia provides expert anaesthetic and critical care services to patients at both hospitals.

We use the latest imaging technology to minimise the need for invasive procedures and to ensure the highest quality investigations possible.
