FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday 5 August 2009
With under a month to go, local residents are being urged to put on their trainers and take part in Harefield Hopsital’s annual fun run on Sunday 6 September 2009. Money raised will go towards a £1.5 million MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scanner to help give heart and lung patients the most accurate and pain-free diagnosis of their condition.
Last year, over 900 fun run participants raised an impressive £42 000, all of which contributed towards this state of the art piece of equipment.
Former patient, Lisa Muscutt, said: “I had my lung transplant at Harefield Hospital in 2007 and decided to take part in the fun run last year. I wanted to show people what having transplant could do to change my life and that I could do the run.
“It was a way for me to express my gratitude to the donor family and show people how much my life had improved. I also wanted to raise money for the hospital and give something back to the place that had helped to save my life. I hope people will feel inspired to take part in the fun run and help raise as much money as possible for an important cause.”
Fundraising director, Jenny Walton, said: “Each year patients, their families, friends and supporters from the local community help to make the fun run a truly amazing event. It doesn’t matter if you take it slowly around the course. We just want people to have an enjoyable day. It is a great way for Harefield residents to have a healthy day out whilst supporting a local cause.”
The fun run starts at 11.30 a.m. although there will be other activities, stalls and entertainment from 9.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. as well as a raffle with fabulous prizes, including a trial lesson in a glider. You can choose a one or three and a half mile course through picturesque countryside that is not normally accessible to the public.
By registering in advance participants pay £7.50 for adults or £3.50 for children. On the day registration fees will be £10 for adults and £5 for children. The entrance fee includes a t-shirt and a medal.
First organised 28 years ago, the fun run started as the Harefield Healthy Heart Run in 1981 inspired by the success of the first London Marathon in 1980. The inaugural run was started by the late Eric Morecambe, a patient of the hospital.
Thousands of participants of all ages have made their way around two courses – many of them have been former transplant and by-pass patients with incredible stories of courage and determination. To date, over £650 000 has been raised through the fun run for research and treatment of patients with heart and lung disease.
