Patients rate Trust highly in Care Quality Commission’s outpatient survey

Patients are satisfied with the high quality care and treatment they receive at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust according to a Care Quality Commission (CQC) outpatient survey published today. Significantly, patients gave a rating of 98 out of 100 when asked about levels of privacy when being examined or treated.

Patients were asked a series of 48 questions relating to their experience as an outpatient.  The Trust was in the category of ‘best performing 20 per cent of Trusts’ for nearly half of all questions asked (48 per cent), including:

  • A score of 98 out of 100 for ‘outpatients being given enough privacy when being examined or treated’;

  • 95 out of 100 for ‘staff explaining to outpatients how to take new medications’;

  • 92 out of 100 for ‘doctors listening to what outpatients had to say’; and

  • 90 out of 100 for ‘overall satisfaction with the outpatients department’.

Dr. Caroline Shuldham, director of nursing, governance & informatics, of Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, said, “We welcome the results of this survey. The experience of patients is key: therefore their opinions will always remain one of the most important measures by which we measure our performance.”

Areas where improvements could be made were also identified in the survey. These relate to communication with patients regarding how long they may have to wait in the department and communication about test results. Work has already started to determine the best approach to improve the Trust’s performance in these areas.

The report represents the third national survey of adult outpatients in NHS hospitals in England and follows earlier surveys conducted in 2003 and 2004.  Over 72,000 patients who visited one of 163 acute or specialist NHS trusts during March, April or May 2009 responded, a response rate of 53 per cent.
