Biography

Professor S Yen Ho is a consultant cardiac morphologist for the Trust, studying the structure of the heart to better understand congenital and pathological cardiac anatomy.

Professor Ho receives referrals of heart specimens and cases from all over the UK and overseas, and is an expert in the post-mortem examination of normally structured hearts with conduction disturbance (arrhythmia) and hearts with congenital malformations.

Professor Ho is well recognised for her research and education projects and regularly speaks at international conferences. She also teaches courses in:

  • cardiology
  • electrophysiology
  • paediatric cardiology
  • cardiac surgery
  • pathology and veterinary science.

She has represented the Trust at events including the European Congress of Cardiology, the  European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Asia-Pacific Pediatric Cardiology Society, and Association of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons of Asia, the  European Heart Rhythm Association, the Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Association and the  Heart Rhythm Society (USA).

Research interests

Professor Ho’s research interests include:

  • correlating morphology with imaging techniques, such as echocardiography
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
  • CT (computed tomography)
  • the anatomy of the heart relevant to interventional cardiology
  • electrophysiology in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias
  • surgical treatments for these conditions.

Teaching

Professor Ho has pioneered education of cardiac morphology in 3D, and her human anatomy and morphology short courses are recognised internationally, attracting participants from all corners of the world. In particular, her annual course "hands-on cardiac morphology" has become so in demand that she is running it twice a year to increasing numbers of participants.

She has run several of her short courses abroad, e.g. in Singapore, Turkey and Italy, and has more courses planned for the future. In addition to giving regular morphology seminars at the Trust for staff and visiting fellows, she conducts workshops on cardiac anatomy and morphology at the Trust that are designed to suit the training programmes of external institutions.

Within her role, she also teaches international students at the Trust and mentors visiting fellows.

Published work

Professor Ho has written ten books, including:

  • Anatomy for electrophysiologists: a practical handbook
  • Echocardiography in congenital heart disease made simple
  • Congenital heart disease in mammals
  • Anatomy of the heart by multislice computed tomography
  • Atlas of real-time 3D transesophageal echocardiography

She has also had more than 400 papers published in peer-reviewed journals covering the multi-facets of her scientific/ medical research.
