Biography

Dr Omar Usmani qualified in medicine at King's College London. He trained in respiratory and general internal medicine at St Thomas', King's College and Bromley hospitals. He did his PhD at Imperial College, London, with his research work published in BBC News' Online Stories on asthma treatments and coughs.

In 2005, he received the Best PhD Thesis Prize at the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI), Imperial College London. He also received an Alavi-Mandell Award from the American Society of Nuclear Medicine. These awards were related to inhaled aerosol science and drug delivery to lungs.

Areas of expertise

Dr Usmani is an honorary consultant physician at the Trust and a clinical senior lecturer at the NHLI.

He runs the chronic cough clinic at Royal Brompton Hospital. He is part of the consultant-led chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) service. He also sees patients with asthma in the asthma lab.

Dr Usmani's research interests include:

  • patients with asthma and COPD
  • inhalers and inhaled drug delivery techniques
  • lung imaging
  • physiology of airways
  • pharmacology of coughs
  • molecular biology of inhaled drugs

Teaching and publications

Dr Usmani has presented his research at national and international conferences.

He is also on the editorial board for the online journal Cough.


Research Publications

An aerosol system is described for the generation and delivery of measured doses of monodisperse therapeutic drug particles to the human lungs.

Inhaled radiolabeled aerosols provide invaluable information about in vivo drug deposition.
