Biography

After graduating from the School of Medicine at the University of Ioannina, Greece, Dr Panoulas completed a PhD in genetic regulation of hypertension in patients with rheumatoid arthritis at Russells Hall Hospital in Birmingham and the University of Ioannina.

He also holds an MSc in interventional cardiology from Universita Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Milan, Italy.

He underwent his core medical training at Guys and St Thomas' Hospitals (2008-2010) and his cardiology core training at Hammersmith Hospital (Imperial College NHS Trust), where he was appointed as a National Heart and Lung Institute (NIHR) academic clinical fellow (2010-2013). He then undertook an interventional cardiology fellowship at San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan, Italy for one year (2013-2014) and subsequently was a North West London interventional fellow for two years at Hammersmith Hospital, Imperial College NHS Trust (2014-2016). He was appointed a NIHR clinical lecturer in cardiology from 2013-2016 (NIHR, Imperial College London).

He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians and a fellow of the European Society of Cardiology.

Other qualifications include knowledge-based assessment (KBA) in cardiovascular medicine from the British Cardiovascular Society; certification in adult transthoracic echocardiography from the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACV); and computed tomography level two accreditation from the British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging.

Areas of expertise

Dr Vasileios Panoulas is a consultant cardiologist at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust and honorary senior clinical lecturer at Imperial College London. He has clinical expertise that encompasses both general and interventional cardiology. 

Dr Panoulas has a special interest in complex coronary angioplasty, transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and percutaneous mechanical assist devices for treatment of acute cardiogenic shock. 

Research interests

Dr Panoulas' research interests involve transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), use of bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS) in clinical practice, acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and hypertension. Other interests include speckle tracking and hand-held echocardiography and cardiovascular disease in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. 

Teaching

Dr Panoulas is involved in weekly teaching sessions for both undergraduate students and junior cardiology doctors with a focus on interventional cardiology.
