Biography

Dr Simon Mattison graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1999 and completed postgraduate training in some of London's leading hospitals, including:

  • Kings College Hospital
  • University College London Hospital
  • St Thomas' Hospital.  

He was appointed as a consultant in cardiothoracic and transplant anaesthesia at Harefield Hospital in 2012. 

Clinical expertise

Dr Mattison is the anaesthetic lead for catheterisation laboratories and radiology.

He has pioneered initiatives aimed at improving patient safety, including:

  • designing bespoke World Health Organisation (WHO) checklists 
  • being a leading member of a simulation training programme for emergencies in acute cardiology. 

He has also been instrumental in helping to make lung tumour ablation a leading clinical service by initiating a pre-assessment and optimisation clinic for very high-risk patients. 

Dr Mattison has special interests in:

  • anaesthesia for heart and lung transplantation
  • anaesthesia for lung tumour ablation
  • intra-operative transoesophageal echocardiography
  • simulation training.

Teaching

Dr Mattison is currently the departmental lead for:

  • the anaesthesia clinical services accreditation (ACSA), focusing on patient care, safety and experience
  • undergraduate education in anaesthesia and intensive care.
