Biography

Dr Dalby trained at St Mary’s Medical School (now part of Imperial College London) going on to study for his MD thesis at Royal Brompton Hospital. Subsequently, he undertook Fellowships at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital Paris and Hôpital Charles-Nicolle Rouen, as part of his clinical training. 

Dr Dalby has worked at Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals as a consultant cardiologist since 2005 and has been awarded a silver national merit award for his clinical work, service development, teaching and research.

Areas of expertise 

Dr Dalby specialises in interventional cardiology (treating the heart using ‘keyhole’ methods under local anaesthetic through thin tubes) including coronary angioplasty and stent placement.   

He is a co-founder of Harefield Hospital's distinguised 'primary angioplasty' program treating heart attack patients with emergency stent procedures. The hospital's primary angioplasty service has one of the fastest ‘door to procedure’ rates in the country - the rate of response plays a crucial role in the procedure's success. The program has now treated more than 10,000 patients. 

Dr Dalby also set up and leads the transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) service at Harefield hospital which has treated more than 500 patients.

Dr Dalby's is an honorary senior lecturer at Imperial College and his research interests focus on his clinical areas of expertise including:

  • Logistics of Heart Attack Treatment
  • Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation
  • Heart Failure and Mechanical Circulatory Support

Teaching

Dr Dalby teaches medical students at Imperial College London, and postgraduate doctors Nationally and Internationally working with both the British Cardiac Society and European Society of Cardiology.

He developed and runs the annual international London SHOCK meeting which brings together experts in this important area.

He also leads Harefield Hospital's annual Your Heart Hospital event, a multi-site public and patient event that aims to explain what goes in a specialist heart hospital and demystifies the complex treatments used in contemporary practice.

Publications

Dr Dalby has published more than 100 scientific papers and acted as a reviewer for a number of scientific journals including European Heart Journal and Circulation

Reviewing and committee work

Dr Dalby has acted as a reviewer for International Journal of CardiologyCirculation and the European Journal of Cardiology.

He serves on the committee of the North West London Cardiac Network Primary Angioplasty Group and the North West London Cardiac Network Percutaneous Aortic Valve Group.
