Dr Margaret M Burke

Consultant histopathologist

 

Specialist expertise

Dr Burke works in cardiothoracic and transplant pathology, with special expertise in the complications of heart and lung transplantation, pathology of cardiac and respiratory disease, contribution of autopsy pathology to mortality audit; pathology of Barrett’s oesophagus and associated upper gastrointestinal tumours.

 

Research

Dr Burke's research is clinically driven and includes the pathology of acute and chronic allograft rejection; post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders; pathology of heart on left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support; and cardiomyopathies.

 

She also participates in collaborative research on complications of transplantation.

 

Education

Dr Burke contributes to postgraduate education at local, regional and national levels.

 

Committees

Dr Burke is a founder member of the UK Heart Lung Transplant Pathology Group; a member of the International Society for Heart & Lung Transplantation, the Society for Cardiovascular Pathology, the Association of European Cardiovascular Pathologists, the British Cardiovascular Pathology Group

 

She is a representative for the Cardiovascular Pathology, Histopathology Subspecialties Committee, Royal College of Pathologists.

 

Developing governancy systems

Trust lead on development of governance systems for scheduled uses of human specimens as defined by the Human Tissue Act (2004); and a member of the Human Tissue Authority Advisory Group, Royal College of Pathologists.
