The pain management service (PMS) provides a comprehensive range of services to both inpatient and outpatients of the Trust. The multidisciplinary Pain Management team consists of Consultant Anaesthetists, specialist nurses, physiotherapists and pharmacists.

For the management of acute pain, the use of patient controlled analgesia (PCA) and epidural analgesia are well established. We offer treatments for patients with chronic painful conditions such as refractory angina and post-thoracotomy pain syndrome.

The team is actively involved in a number of research and audit projects focused on the management of acute post-operative pain.

Information for doctors

The PMS does not offer a pain management programme for chronic painful conditions. Patients with chronic refractory angina are usually referred directly by cardiologists to Dr Gavin Wright who assesses suitability for interventions such as TENS and stellate ganglion blocks.

Patients with refractory angina that may benefit from spinal cord stimulators are referred to a local pain management programme.
