General allergy clinics – Royal Brompton Hospital

Run by Professor Stephen Durham (Wednesday morning) and Dr Andrew Menzies-Gow (Wednesday afternoon).

The general allergy clinics are suitable for patients with all types of suspected allergic disease.

Joint medical / surgical clinic – Royal Brompton Hospital

Joint clinic run by Professor Stephen Durham and Hesham Saleh (ear, nose and throat surgeon from Charing Cross Hospital) on a Tuesday morning.


Who should be referred? 

This clinic is suitable for patients with allergic diseases, which affect the nose, sinuses or upper airway.


Test and treatments available:

  • Nasal challenge 
  • Flexible and rigid endoscopy
  • Skin prick testing
  • Sinus CT scanning
  • Endoscopic sinus surgery and diagnostic biopsy (at Charing Cross Hospital)

Referrals can be made via letter addressed to Professor Stephen Durham.


How it links with other services:

This clinic links into the general allergy service and the food allergy service.



Food allergy clinics – Royal Brompton Hospital

Led by Professor Stephen Durham (Wednesday morning) and Dr Andrew Menzies-Gow (Wednesday afternoon), and run by Dr Isabel Skypala (consultant allergy dietitian).


Who should be referred?

The clinics are suitable for patients with all types of suspected food allergy.

Links into the general allergy service and the food allergy / gastroenterology service.



Joint food allergy / gastroenterology clinic – Royal Brompton Hospital

Led by Professor Stephen Durham, and run by Dr Isabel Skypala and Dr Alan Steel (consultant gastroenterologist Chelsea and Westminster Hospital). The clinic is held on the first Wednesday morning of the month.


Who should be referred?

The joint clinic is suitable for patients with all types of suspected food allergy, whose symptoms are predominantly gastrointestinal.

Food allergy clinic – Harefield Hospital

Led by Dr Joanna Szram and run by Dr Isabel Skypala.


Who should be referred?

The food allergy clinic is suitable for patients with all types of suspected food allergy.

How it links with other services:

Links into the occupational allergy and respiratory services at Harefield Hospital, and to the food challenge service at Royal Brompton Hospital.



 Specialist diagnostic tests and treatments 

  • Skin prick testing with foods – this can identify food allergies not always identified by conventional testing
  • Molecular diagnosis and detailed knowledge of molecular allergy testing – testing for individual food and aeroallergens, which advances the diagnosis of food allergy 
  • Food challenge testing – takes place on the day-case unit and provides open and blinded oral food challenges carried out in accordance to international guidelines on best practice
  • Drug challenge testing – takes place on the day-case unit and consists of skin prick and intradermal testing followed by oral challenge as indicated
  • Immunotherapy services
