Single sex accommodation

Declaration of compliance

The Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to confirm that we are compliant with the Government’s requirement to eliminate mixed-sex accommodation, except when it is in the patient’s overall best interest, or reflects their personal choice.

We have the necessary facilities, resources and culture to ensure that patients who are admitted to our hospitals will only share the room where they sleep with members of the same sex, and same-sex toilets and bathrooms will be close to their bed area.

Sharing with members of the opposite sex will only happen when clinically necessary, (for example; where patients need specialist equipment or care such as in our intensive care, recovery, high dependency and acute coronary care unit, or in our children’s wards where clinical need and age and stage of development may take precedence over gender considerations.

We have some unisex bathing facilities, for use by a single person of either gender. These facilities are specially adapted for access by people with a disability and may contain specialist equipment such as hoists. All are individual, lockable cubicles.

If our care should fall short of the required standard, we will report it.

We will also set up a yearly audit mechanism to make sure that we do not misclassify any of our reports. We will publish the results of that audit on this page.

This declaration was approved by the Trust Board on 28 March 2012.

Internal audit findings 2011-12

In line with national requirements the Trust commissioned its internal auditors, KPMG, to audit the quality and accuracy of reporting and monitoring of single sex accommodation breaches.

An assessment of adequate assurance (the highest grade possible) has been given by KPMG:

The Trust has appropriate systems and protocols in place to monitor the provision of and compliance with single sex accommodation requirements and to ensure the accuracy of its data collection. There are robust procedures in place to identify justified and reportable breaches in compliance. Our review confirmed that management has appropriate plans in place to ensure that compliance is maintained going forwards.
