Hello. I’m Professor Tim Evans, medical director of Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals.
You may be visiting our website because you’re due to visit us for treatment, or perhaps you’re thinking of applying for a job with us - whatever the reason we thought a short preview of what to expect when you get here might be helpful.
The first thing that most people notice when they arrive is the relative calm of our reception areas. That’s because as a specialist heart and lung centre rather than a general hospital, we don’t have accident and emergency departments. All our patients have been recommended to us by their GP or hospital doctor because of our expertise in heart and lung disease.
And as a specialist centre we’re fortunate to have the very best facilities. Our scanners are among the most sophisticated on the market, our intensive care departments, for both adults and children, are equipped with some of the most advanced monitoring technology available and if you come to us with coronary artery disease you’ll be treated in state-of-the-art catheter laboratories.
But nobody chooses a hospital just because it has good equipment. As an international teaching centre we attract the best doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals from the UK and abroad.
They may have different backgrounds but they have one important thing in common – their concern for the welfare of our patients.
And patients seem to appreciate the treatment and care they receive. Not only do they write and thank us in their hundreds, but they also rate us highly in national NHS surveys.
We do well in other assessments too. Our children’s services were recently rated ‘excellent’ by the Healthcare Commission and both Harefield and Royal Brompton were ranked in the top three hospitals for heart disease in a national independent guide.
Coming to hospital can be an anxious time for many people and we’re well aware of that. Patients come to us from all over the country and whatever their problem we have just one aim – to do everything we can to make a stay with us as successful as possible.
Thank you for your time.
