Petition passes 26,000

13 June 2011

The petition, organised by The Brompton Fountain to save children’s cardiac surgery services at Royal Brompton Hospital, has exceeded its 26,000 signature target and is on the way to 30,000.

The services face closure as a result of a recommendation by a Joint Committee of Primary Care Trusts (JCPCT), which reviewed current paediatric cardiac surgery services in England. Of four options proposed by the JCPCT for reconfiguring children’s heart surgery to reduce the number of centres involved from 11 to six or seven, none include Royal Brompton’s world-renowned services.

“There’s obviously a lot strong feeling about this potential closure and the threat it poses to other services in the hospital,” said Trudy Nickels, manager of The Brompton Fountain, a charity that supports the families of child patients at Royal Brompton.

“We’re delighted by the number of signatures collected so far and thank everyone for supporting us. We won’t stop there. Our aim is to get as many signatures as we can so that the JCPCT understands exactly how many people oppose their proposals.”

The Brompton Fountain plans to take the petition to Downing Street to present it to the Prime Minister.
