Children taking part in the "bugs and butterflies" fancy dress contest

Royal Brompton Hospital

nursery fete is

absolutely fabulous

28 September 2007

Royal Brompton Hospital had an absolutely fabulous guest star for its recent nursery fete in the shape of actress Joanna Lumley.

Ms Lumley visited the hospital to judge the nursery’s “bugs and butterflies” themed fancy dress contest. Complimenting all the children on their "deportment, courtesy and behaviour" – and saying that it was almost impossible to decide on a winner – she ultimately chose four year old preying mantis Matthew Lee as the overall victor.

Matthew’s mum Nicole Goh, a clinical research fellow, was surprised but delighted by the decision.

“To be honest I was really surprised Matthew won because there were so many other beautiful costumes. Of course I’m very proud of him.”

And she said having a star on hand to judge the competition made the whole event particularly memorable.

“Joanna Lumley was so friendly and approachable and really good with the children. It made it extra special having her here today.”

Patricia De Laszlo, nursery manager, was particularly struck by the level of interest the actress showed in the hospital and the children.

“She spoke to each and every child and took the time to comment on something specific about their costume. She was very gentle and caring and just generally interested in each of the children and the work of the hospital.

“We’re really grateful to her for taking the time to come here today – it made the day.”
