Arena of Hearts - Michael Woods
Chelsea Wing - public stairwell and cardiology department
Michael Woods has generously donated over 20 works of art for display at Royal Brompton Hospital. Much of the work has been made in collaboration with Peter Collins, Professor of Clinical Cardiology.
‘Arena of Hearts consists of mixed media, semi surrealist three dimensional assemblages.
The work explores the complexity of the human heart, reflecting how we think of our hearts, its myriad shrines, motifs and symbols.
The heart functions beyond our perceptual awareness performing a bio-physiological juggling act to facilitate whatever physical exertion we place on it. Arena of hearts will also include elements of activity across the whole spectrum of human behaviour. Snapshots and references, historical and contemporary, will thread together rituals and routines, ranging from the chores we undertake to our amusements and pastimes.’
GUCH project - Emily Allchurch
Preliminary design for GUCH ward single room
Emily Allchurch carried out two art workshops with patients, their relatives and staff from GUCH ward. The workshops were focused on creating lots of different pictures (drawings, paintings, collages) that Emily has collaged together to make giant panels for the corridor and rooms in the GUCH area.
Sue Snell was taking photos on both days and chatting to participants about their thoughts on the whole process!
Sue is an award-winning photographer and also a lifelong congenital heart patient at this Trust. She will be putting together an exhibition about GUCH, creativity, and this project.
This project has been generously supported by the family and friends of Andrew James.
